According to this document from the BostonFireHistory.org, Grandpa Carlson was a ladderman with Engine company 50 from Feb 15, 1918 to July 16, 1934.  He made $1300 bucks a year in 1919 and he lived at 37 Revere St in Boston.  I had no idea he had an "Emauel" in his name.   Below is the house at 37 Revere St today.
